Maths

‘Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline…a high-quality mathematics education should provide a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity.’

(National Curriculum for Mathematics, 2014)

At Hippings Methodist Primary School, we endeavour to provide exciting and engaging lessons, opportunities and experiences in order to foster children’s mathematical understanding and help all pupils to develop a confident, skilled and resilient approach to all aspects of the subject.

Through the teaching of key mathematical skills we aim for all of our learners to:

  • Be fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry
  • Solve problems by applying their mathematical understanding and knowledge

Early Years Foundation Stage

Mathematical learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage is guided by the requirements and recommendations set out in the Revised Statutory Framework for the EYFS, the non-statutory Development Matters curriculum guidance, White Rose Maths scheme of Work and the NCETM Mastering Number Programme.

Key Stages 1 and 2

The White Rose Maths Scheme of Work is used to support mathematical learning in Years 1 to 6. Every resource has been carefully designed to ensure it addresses the three key National Curriculum aims of fluency, reasoning and problem solving and follows the principles of teaching for mastery. All learners explore maths in depth, using mathematical vocabulary to reason and explain their workings and make sense of the world around them by making connections between mathematics and everyday life. Learning is carefully planned and sequenced, taking into account what has been taught before, and what knowledge and skills are needed for the next stage of the children’s mathematical development. At the core of our maths curriculum is the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach.

By offering flexible groupings, providing an environment that embraces mistakes as opportunities for further learning and encouraging both resilience and perseverance, we enable children to succeed as mathematicians.

At Hippings Methodist Primary School, we aim for all children to leave as knowledgeable, skilful and confident mathematicians ready for the next phase of their learning and future employment.
